| Birding is simply observing birds with your naked eyes or with an optical aid, as a form of leisure. The attraction in birding is in seeing the birds in their unmanaged natural habitat. This would be pure joy to a bird enthusiast who can spend hours admiring these graceful creatures as they soar and swoop gracefully in the sky.
Birding as a pastime is a relatively new venture and has notably developed in the 20th century. Americans and the British have been the most enthusiastic birders, with The Netherlands, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries following closely. Passionate birders invest heavily in visual aid optical equipment like telescopes to be able to enjoy their pastime. They will travel far and wide to keep watch on their most loved birds. They are also very keen on the birds’ migratory patterns.
There are also rarity bird seekers who will travel for long distances to locate a rare bird species. These are the most passionate of birders as they will keep lists of “observed birds”. The lists will often add up to county lists, country lists or national lists. The most active season for birding is during autumn migrations or during springtime when birds can be seen in multitudes. On a regular day, early morning is the ideal time for birding as the birds search for food.
The equipment used for birding includes the spotting scope, tripods and special birding binoculars. Famous birders include Ted Parker, Kenn Kaufman, Jimmy Carter (former US president) Salim Ali and of course, our very own Bill Oddie. |
